  • Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease of the joint that causes pain and swelling in the joints.
  • Osteo means Bones and Arthritis is painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints 
  • It is called Sandhigata Vata in Ayurveda. 
  • As per Ayurveda sandhigata vata means the invasion and localisation of vitiated Vayu in the different joints of the body thereby producing pain,swelling and difficulty in movements (stiffness)
  • OA occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of the bones wear down over some time. OA can affect and damage any joints (sandhis) in the bodySymptoms 
  • Joint pain and stiffness 
  • Joint swelling 
  • Restricted movements 
  • Local temperature at the affected joints

Age group- Late 40s onwards Treatments

  • Samshodhana – Purificatory Therapies
  • Lepam – local application of paste prepared out of medicinal herbs
  • Sneha karma – Massage ( Abyagam) with medicated oils
  • Sneha pana – Internal Oleation using medicated Ghee.

Rasayana – Rejuvenation 

  • Followed with Internal Medications. Preventive Measures 

Lifestyle modifications

  • Regular exercise 
  • Maintain optimum weight 
  • Healthy Diet
  • Protecting injured joint from further damage

Don’ts 

  • Fasting and excessive intake of heavy foods
  • Night awakening 
  • Suppression of natural urges
  • Stress
  • Prolonged standing.
  • Asthma is a condition in which airways becomes narrow and swollen and may produce extra mucus
  • This can cause breathing difficulties and trigger coughing.
  • Asthma is marked by inflammation of the bronchial tubes with extra sticky secretions inside the tubes.

Symptoms 

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Wheezing when exhaling, which is a common sign of Asthma in children. 
  • Trouble sleeping caused by Shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing.

Causes according to Ayurveda 

  • As per Ayurveda, it is termed as pranavaha sroto vikara
  • Accumulation of ‘Vata dosa’ inside the body Guru- heavy diet, Ruksha – dry diet, intake of cold water, excessive salts, living in cold, damp and humid area, cold water bath, exposure to dust, smoke, cold air etc 
  • Kapha prakopa – Ahara(diet), vihara( activities) , heavy dietary foods,Banana, black grams,milk,sour,curd, non vegetarian foods etc

Types according to Ayurveda 

  • Maha swasa – Heavy breathing 
  • Urdhava swasam- prolonged upward breathing 
  • Chinna swasa -Interrupted breathing 
  • Tamak swasa -darkness behind eyes

Ayurvedic line of Treatments

Panchakarma:-

  • Virechana chikitsa – Pitta and Kapha doshas are removed
  • Snehana chikitsa- Disease causing factors doshas are suppressed 
  • Shodhana chikitsa- Disease causing factors doshas are removed 
  • Swedana chikitsa – lubricates the body

Preventive Measures 

  • Practice Yoga daily
  • Avoid Kapha aggravating foods
  • Keep away from allergens such as dust or mold
  • Avoid smoke of any type
  • Follow shodhana therapies at least once in a year.
